Foretold: Jeremiah Chapter 49, the Bible

13 For I have sworn by Myself,” says the Lord, “that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

Foretold: Book of Obadiah, the Bible

The vision of Obadiah.

Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom
(We have heard a report from the Lord,
And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,
“Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle”):

“Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
You shall be greatly despised.
The pride of your heart has deceived you,
You who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
Whose habitation is high;
You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’
Though you ascend as high as the eagle,
And though you set your nest among the stars,
From there I will bring you down,” says the Lord.

 Foretold: Malachi Chapter 1, the Bible

Even though Edom has said,

“We have been impoverished,
But we will return and build the desolate places,”

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“They may build, but I will throw down;
They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness,
And the people against whom the Lord will have indignation forever.
Your eyes shall see,
And you shall say,
‘The Lord is magnified beyond the border of Israel.’

Modern: Jordan & Southern Israel

Edomites were descendants of Esau and dwelt in southern Jordan. They were of the family line of Abraham and brothers of the Israelite race that began their decline after the Babylonian period.

One of the last mentions of the Edomites as a distinct race came with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.  The Nabatean culture co-mingled and prevailed in the Edomite lands rising in prosperity but disappearing from history by the 6th century AD.

Fulfilled: Seeing is Believing

The fortunes of the Edomites declined after the invasions by Babylon led by Nebuchadnezzar. Nabatean culture became ascendant and built up the land again.  Their fall and the land’s desolation until discovery again in the early 1800s fulfills the additional prophetic details the Bible prophet Malachi added to the doom foretold.

Pictured above – Facade of broken ancient Amphitheater in Petra desert – just one of dozens of sites and cities left vacant and desolate precisely as the Bible foretold over 2,600 years ago.

Resting mostly in what is now modern Jordan and south east Israel, Edom is historically traced in the Bible to be the progeny of Esau, brother of Jacob/Israel. Edom became an important Kingdom by the time of Assyrian power in the 8th century with its capital in Bozrah.

Yet, as described in the prediction above, by the time of the rise of the Babylonian Empire two centuries later, the Edomites sinned and became the object of God’s wrath.

After the decline of the Edomites, the Nabatean culture grew dominant and prosperous in the heart of a great trading route, the King’s Highway, through the 5th century AD. Yet, a curse was on the land (Malachi 1:2-5) and the civilization declined, last mentioned in burnt scrolls discovered in 1993 in a Petra Byzantine church dating to the end of the 6th century AD.

The land was lost to the world by the 13th century AD only to be rediscovered centuries later in 1812. Skeptics who believed Edom legendary, were forced to see prophecy fulfilled again.
